Farewell, Conn

Today I packed up my room and said goodbye to campus for the next 9 months. (It seems so long!) I think I was one of the last people to leave my dorm, it took way longer to pack up the car than I expected.  Floor governors kept coming by to make sure I was leaving and, I think, hoping to find my room empty each time. They eventually gave up and checked my room while I still had a few things in it.

My mom and I have been (vaguely) discussing vacation plans for next summer in Europe. I have to leave Russia at the end of my abroad program and get a new visa for the summer, so my mom thinks it would be cool for the family to join me somewhere in Europe while I get the visa. Right now, my vote is for Prague or Paris, but I'm not going to be picky.

Glad to be home and entertained by my ever-exuberant little sister. :-) Her latest project is proposing that SNL bring Kel on and revive some of the old Kenan and Kel material. First we created a group on facebook, but the new format is incredibly confusing when it comes to that, so it's a fan page now (Reunite Kenan and Kel on SNL). Please join if you're willing to support Paula's illusion that she can impact change!

And then there was an internship

I received my first positive response from a potential internship for next summer! The email was in Russian, so there are probably some subtleties that I missed, but the short of it is that they want me! They really want me! Sorry, after weeks of wondering what I'd do if I was unable to find anything, it's amazing to have an offer.

The only thing that makes me a little hesitant about the internship is that apparently the entire theater is shutting down in June, so I can work for them in May, July, and August, but I'd have nothing to do in June. On the other hand, if I can figure out a way to pay for it, maybe I could just go travelling in June. It'd be a pretty cool opportunity to just wander around Europe.

И так, the search continues. From the alumni contacts that I've talked to and then their contacts, I'm still a couple of degrees removed from anyone who could actually offer me an internship, but I've got time now, and a back-up plan.  If only they would respond to my emails...

In other news:
Finals are officially upon us and due to my terrible procrastination, papers should take me until next wednesday to complete.

Today was my last day teaching at RMMS this year, which was sad.  The kids are all great, even if they can sometimes be hyper, and I really loved getting to know them and teaching them.  I wish that I'd been able to teach them more about grammar and stuff, but I remember what it was like to learn a language at that age, so I'm glad that I at least gave them a sampling.

Now: to bed. I think I've slept a total of 10 hours (at most) in the last 3 days. I seriously don't know how I haven't collapsed yet. I've still got a lot of work to do, but I'm going to take tonight to recharge in the hope that tomorrow I'll be able to concentrate and get stuff done. (6 days left!)

My life is bi/tri-lingual

Ну, здравствуй всем! Как обычно, я думала о блоге когда я должна думать о работе.  И тоже как обычно, я не могла больше работать перед тем, как я писала что-то.

I've decided, for the time being, to write this blog even though I'm stateside and the original purpose of this was for a sort of abroad-journal type thing.  As you can tell by the start of this post, and the title, since I'm not abroad, I had to write about something else.  J'ai realisé recently that my thoughts tend to be kind of scrambled between the three languages that I know best, и так, я хотела вам показать немножко как это жить в моем голове.  My apologies to those of you who do not speak all three of these languages, but it can't be helped.

Честно говоря, я гуляю или хожу по кампусе и я всегда switch back and forth between Russian, English, and occasionally French. And I don't mean like a word here and there. Full phrases, sentences, trains of thought develop in both languages.  Where my knowledge of Russian fails, I insert French or English.  When English doesn't fit my mood for one reason or another, I think in Russian.

It's kind of cool, until I realize that thinking so often in Russian is now affecting my ability to form a coherent paper in English. Or that might just be the lack of sleep. Не важно.

First post

So I'm a bit early starting this blog, but it's 4am on a Wednesday morning and I can't sleep, so I thought I'd do something (mildly) productive.

The idea of this blog WILL be as a study abroad journal, once I get there.  I've only got one last recommendation to send in and then my application will be complete. Here's hoping that I actually get to go where I want.

I'm also in the midst of starting to look for potential internships in Russia for next summer, so if you know anyone who knows anyone PLEASE let me know.

Anyway, after the 5 minutes of procrastination this provided, it's back to reading War and Peace.
